CHALMERS O. McCATHERN Jr.
Chalmers O'Neil McCathern Jr., 83, husband of Laura Jean Reynolds McCathern, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at a local nursing facility.
Born in Mayesville, he was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, and was a retired auto mechanic. During his lifetime, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed building and racing cars at Sumter Speedway and surrounding racetracks.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, Chalmers Edward McCathern and wife, Gretchen, of Elliott and Chris McCathern of Manning; a daughter, Sandra McCathern Callender and husband, Kenneth, of Columbia; a brother, Roy McCathern and wife, Nadine, of Gable; and a granddaughter, Leslie Anne McCathern.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael O'Neil McCathern.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Rivers officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Deacons of New Salem Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
