CONYERS Charles Leroy Conyers, 69, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born Oct. 10, 1939, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Leroy McKenzie Conyers and the late Julia Watts Conyers Gamble Warren. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service as an aviation electrician and was a member of New Start Community Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are a daughter, Judy C. Cales, and her husband Randy of Jackson, Ga.; a son, Charles L. Conyers Jr., of Columbia; two brothers, Gene Conyers, of Alcolu, and Tom Conyers of Sumter; three grandchildren, April Holladay, Lisa Conyers and Georgia Conyers. He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Conyers, and a brother, Jim Conyers. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.
