CHAPPELL Howard Hamilton Chappell, age 81, beloved husband of the late Emma "Cricket" Francs Taylor Chappell, died on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was born in Weldon, N.C., a son of the late Temple Archer Chappell and Mary Townsend Entwisle Chappell. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant after 21 years of service and served in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a radar operator and was one of three people to set up radar in Japan. He was assigned Temporary Duty (TDY) for 90 days in the Panama Canal Zone and stayed for 18 months and was also awarded the Joint Services Commendation Medal. He taught basic training at Keesler Air Force Base, the U.S. Forces Azores, Lajes Field, Portugal, Forbes Air Force Base and Bossier Base. He later worked as a production supervisor at Campbell Soup and also was a circulation director. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Wayne H. Chappell and his wife, Cathy, and Gary L. Chappell, both of Sumter; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles T. Chappell, John A. Chappell and Temple A. Chappell; and three sisters, Mary Estell Byers, Sara Gregor and Emily C. Michael. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steven Hendricks officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.
