Deas Virginia Clark Deas, 84, widow of Alex Burchell "A.B." Deas Sr., died Sunday, April 22, 2012, at a local nursing center. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Walter McKagen Clark and Agnes Felder Clark. Mrs. Deas was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Pollyanna Club and established the first blind handicap resource center in the public school system here in Sumter. She was a certified braillest. She retired from Farmers Telephone Coop. Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Deas Briggs and husband, Hartwell, of Manning and Sheila Deas Richardson and husband, Scott, of Sumter; a son, William C. "Bill" Deas and wife, Terris, of West Columbia; grandchildren, Alex Margaret Richardson, Robert Wells Richardson III, Elizabeth Goff and husband, Judd, Joseph Briggs and wife, Meredith, Jessica and Jordan Cunningham, Ethan and Caroline Johnson; and one great-grandchild, Audrey Schweitz. She was preceded in death by a son, Alex Burchell Deas Jr.; two brothers; and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
