Posted Friday, November 1, 2024 10:27 am DALZELL — Donald Lansing Smith Jr., 72, husband of Margaret Ann McLeod Smith, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, at Prisma Health Tuomey.Born Dec. 23, 1951, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Donald L. Smith Sr. and Juanita Tomlinson Smith. He was a loving and faithful husband and partner to his wife, Margaret. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and companionship. A talented musician, Don spent much of his life sharing his gift of music. He was a skilled keyboardist, playing with various bands throughout his life, including Bobby Lewis and Fragile in the early 1970s, and continued with other bands through the years, most recently The Recollections Band. His passion for music was a defining aspect of his life, bringing joy not only to himself, but also to many who had the pleasure of hearing him play. In addition to his musical endeavors, he was also an avid collector of the Honda Dream Motorcycles. Don had a career as a civil engineer, retiring from civil service in 2015 after working for both the City of Charleston and Beaufort County governments. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sisters, Karen S. Owens (Clay) of Charleston and Cynthia S. Mappus (Rick) of Johns Island; one niece; and three nephews. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
