| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina RUTH L. WHITE Ruth Lackey White, our mother and widow of Darby Holman White, was called to her eternal home on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. When asked what she wanted people to remember about her, mother replied, "I just want people to know I've gone to a better place." Mother was born May 18, 1920, a daughter of the late Phares and Easter McLeod Lackey. Mother was a charter member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught children in Sunday school for many years. Mother was a floor supervisor at Pioneer Dress Factory, retiring after more than 30 years. Mother was also a teacher of power sewing at T-Square. Mother is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara (Bob) Duby, Joan (Dan) Snapp, Judy (William) Phillips and Mickey (Fred) Mills; nine grandchildren, Larry (Diana) Duby, Sharon (David) Huggins, Gary (Ann) Duby, Steve (Ann) Snapp, Michael Snapp, Bill (Melinda) Phillips, Terry Mills Calhoun, Denise (Early DuBose) Mills and Paul (Caroline) Mills; 10 great-grandchildren, Robert Huggins, Jessica Duby, Emily and Meredith Snapp, Chad, Matt and Braxton Phillips, Brittany, Tyler and Paul Calhoun; and several much-loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Duke, Henry and Phares; and sisters, Edith, Alma and Mable. Mother loved her Lord, her family, her church, and gardening. As long as she was able, she had a garden. One of mother's favorite places at NHC was the garden alcove, watching the birds and admiring the flowers. Her family thanks her doctors - Drs. Stoddard, Jacocks, Clowney and Mayes DuBose - for their care. We also wish to express our appreciation to the staff at National Healthcare for your day-to-day concern and care shown our mother, and the kindness shown to her four daughters. A special thank you is given to Solaris Hospice for their support during these final days. A celebration of our mother's life will be graveside services at 2 p.m. at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating. The family will greet friends following the service and other times at her daughter's home, 3100 S. Wise Drive. Memorials may be made to Northside Memorial Baptist Church, 1004 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29153. Online condolences may be sent to www.sumterfunerals.com. Mother, it is with much love and thanks that we wish you Godspeed. Your girls - Barbara, Joan, Judy and Mickey. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home & Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements, (803) 775-9386. [2, 3] | |
