| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina at death- he had addtional grandchildren STEPHEN RONALD KIESEL Posted Saturday, December 31, 2022 6:00 am Stephen Ronald Kiesel, age 80, beloved husband of 56 years to Carolyn Diane Hopkins Kiesel, died on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, at Covenant Place. Born in Fort Branch, Indiana, he was a son of the late Edwin A. and Lillian Marie Georges Kiesel. Steve was a highly decorated fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam. He was an instructor pilot in both the T-37 and RF-4 aircraft. Steve retired as a lieutenant colonel after more than 27 years of service. After his military career, he served as the general manager of Power Clean Systems. He was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where he has served on the Parish Council and as a lector. He was involved with Sumter Kiwanis Club, was a proud member of the ROMEO Club (Retired Men Eating Out) and was an avid fisherman. His true joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Leah Smith and her life partner, Julio Rodriguez, of Alpharetta, Georgia, Alayna Niehaus and her husband, Michael, of Sammamish, Washington, Miles Kiesel and his wife, Fiona, of Villa Park, Illinois, and Lacey Ross and her husband, Ryan, of Boerne, Texas; a brother, Harvey Kiesel and his wife, Sue, of Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Summer Smith, Hunter Smith, Anya Niehaus, Grant Niehaus, Erin Muller (Josh), Ethan Tucker (Lauren), Lucas Schultz, Lillian Kiesel, Mila Kiesel and Olivia Ross; and three great-grandchildren, Julie Mueller, John Mueller and Rhett Tucker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Terrance Kiesel and Bradley Kiesel. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Bullock Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church. Inurnment will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors.
