CLARENCE GULLEDGE Sr.
Clarence Jackson "C.J." Gulledge Sr., 85, widower of Margaret Richardson Gulledge, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at his home in Sumter.
Born July 28, 1924, in Wedgefield, he was a son of the late Edmund Thomas Sr. and Lucy Coulter Gulledge. He was a 1946 graduate of Clemson University. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he served as a bombadier. After his graduation from Clemson, he and his wife Margaret returned to Wedgefield, where he was engaged in farming for life. He was one of the founders of Sumter Dairies, where he later served as chairman of the board. He was a lifelong member of the Wedgefield Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was a member of the McCrays Mill Reading and Debating Society. C.J. took joy in his family, his church and his farm.
Surviving are a daughter, Garland Nettles (Larry) of Sumter; two sons, Clarence Jackson Gulledge Jr. and William Randle Gulledge (Sharon) of Sumter; three brothers, E.T. Gulledge Jr. and Lucious Gulledge of Myrtle Beach and C.O. "Buddy" Gulledge of Sumter; a sister, Floride Carter of Greenville; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and lifelong friend to him and his family, Ruth Jackson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wedgefield Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Goff and the Rev. Jim Ridenhour officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, and other times at the residence, 1 Robbins Drive.
