Grant Gardner, 89, husband of Jewel Boykin Gardner, departed this life on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at his home. Born on Oct. 29, 1933, in Stromsburg, Nebraska, he was a son of the late Leonard Joseph Gardner and Jeanette Grant Gardner. Mr. Gardner was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a servant of the Lord at many other churches during his military service. He retired after 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He also retired from Shaw Components. Survivors include his wife of 69 years; three daughters, Jeanette "Jennie" Gardner Barkley (Ricky) of Sumter, Linda Gardner Campbell (Steve) of Sumter and Pamela Gardner Todd (Joey) of Maryville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren, Richard Barkley (Lauren) of Sumter, Andrew Barkley (Shelby) of Huntersville, North Carolina, Christopher Campbell (Meghan) of Hahira, Georgia, MeLinda Campbell Welch (Tommy) of Ridgeville, Kristina Campbell Rearden (Ryan) of Chesterfield, Virginia, Jason Todd of Morristown, Tennessee, Monica Todd Hendricks (Daniel), Kevin Todd (Jessica) and Austin Todd (Gabby) of Maryville; 10 great-grandchildren; and lots of special nieces and nephews of Nebraska, Washington, Oregon, California, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio and Florida. He was preceded in death by nine older sisters and brothers, William Gardner, Marguerit Gardner Demary, Martha Gardner Norine, Wauneta Gardner McCain, Ethel Gardner Ireland, Ruth Gardner Kowalski, Margory Gardner Blomburg, Helen Gardner Songer and Leonard "L.J." Gardner; and two granddaughters, Kimberly Barkley and Rebecca Jewel Barkley. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kevin Massey officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Christopher Campbell, Richard Barkley, Andrew Barkley, Jason Todd, Kevin Todd and Austin Todd. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to New Salem Baptist Church, 2500 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, SC 29154. The family would like to thank Dr. Ansel McFaddin, Kristi Oxendine RN, Palmetto Health Tuomey Home Care, Prisma Health Tuomey Hospice Team and Nannas Loving Care for the compassionate and loving care given to Grant.
