Maggard has graduated from Fire Support Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. The field artillery specialists serve in intelligence activities including target processing in field artillery, cannon battalions, division artillery, artillery and maneuver brigade and headquarters and fire support elements. The course is designed to train students to establish, maintain, and operate radio and wire communications and speech security equipment, including encoding and decoding messages. They also must prepare and maintain daily staff journals, fire support situation maps, charts and other fire support and target processing procedures, records, and documents. In addition, students assist in initiating requests for field artillery, mortar, naval gunfire and aerial delivered munitions, and emplace, maintain and assist in the operation of laser range finders, target designation and night observation devices. Maggard, a son of Glenn G. and Anne B. Maggard of Sumter, graduated from a home school program in 2010. Army Pvt. Charles B. Disher has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat and field maneuvers and tactics. Disher, a son of Lorraine Disher of Sumter, graduated from Lakewood High School in 2007. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ronald L. Webster has deployed to Iraq to serve in support of Operation New Dawn, the formerly named Operation Iraqi Freedom. This transition signifies a formal end to U.S. military combat operations in Iraq. Operation New Dawn shifts the U.S. emphasis from predominantly military to predominately civilian as the U.S. officials assist Iraqis in accordance with the Strategic Framework Agreement. The three primary missions of U.S. Forces include advising, assisting, and training the Iraqi Security Forces; conducting partnered counterterrorism operations; and providing support to provincial reconstruction teams and civilian partners as they help build Iraq's civil capacity. Webster, a hydraulic craftsman with 15 years of military service, is assigned to the 19th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. Webster, a son of Ronald and Bridgette Webster and grandson of Charles and Dorothy Webster, all of Sumter, received a bachelor's degree from American Intercontinental University, Hoffman, Ill., in 2002. John C. Womack has been promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Assigned to the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Fla., he is a civil engineer programs division chief with 21 years of military service. Womack, a son of John and Patricia M. Womack of Sumter, graduated from Hillcrest High School, Dalzell, in 1985, and received a bachelor's degree in 1989 from Clemson University. Air Force Airman Dwayne Baldwin, Airman Ryan L. Becton and Airman 1st Class Edwin D. Flores have each graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airmen completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Baldwin, a son of Dwayne Baldwin of Sumter and grandson of Lenore Baldwin of Manning, graduated from Laurence Manning Academy, Manning, in 2005. Becton, a son of Prima Becton of Sumter, graduated from Crestwood High School in 2004. Flores, a son of Clara Flores of Sumter, graduated from Lee Central High School, Bishopville, in 2009. Army Pvt. Christopher McClinton, Spec. Darien T. Brown, Pvt. Paul S. Dinkins and Pvt. Nicholas D. Howard have each graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia. During the nine weeks of training, the soldiers studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises. McClinton, a son of Marsha McClinton and nephew of Michelle McClinton, both of Turbeville, graduated from East Clarendon High School, Turbeville, in 2008. Brown, a son of Delores Brown of Sumter, graduated from Lakewood High School in 2005 and received a bachelor's degree from Francis Marion University, Florence, in 2009. Dinkins, a son of Jaqualine Dinkins of Sumter, graduated from Lakewood High School in 2003. Howard, a son of Eric Pringle and Marie Powell of Sumter, graduated from Sumter High School in 2010. Navy Seaman Recruit Isaiah Reuben and Andrew J. Barkley have both completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Reuben and Barkley completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Reuben, a son of Annie L.
