Posted Thursday, January 27, 2022 6:00 am Harry Leon Harris Jr., 81, died on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, at his residence in Alpharetta, Georgia. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Harry Leon Harris Sr. and Geraldine Mims Harris. Harry was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter. Harry attended the Sumter city schools and graduated from Edmunds High School in 1958. He graduated with a business degree from Clemson University in 1962. Harry was a member of the Numeral Society at Clemson. He served with the South Carolina Army National Guard for six years. Harry entered his family business, H&S Wholesalers Inc., where he became president and owner. He was a part of the Anheuser-Busch family for 50 years. He was president of the South Carolina Beer Association for four years. He retired at Pawleys Island and ultimately moved to Atlanta to be near his family. Surviving are his daughter, Lucy Harris Barry and husband, David, of Atlanta; three granddaughters, Broughton Barry of Atlanta, Caroline Barry of Boston and Quinn Barry of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his son, Pitts Monroe Harris. Harry enjoyed working beside his beloved son at H&S Wholesalers until his son's death. Harry's favorite meal was breakfast. He and the "breakfast club" would gather each morning at Cole's Restaurant in Sumter. Most weekends you could find Harry playing golf (with Shot) at Sunset Country Club or he was traveling to his favorite island, Little Cayman, to scuba dive. Harry was quite the dancer and loved to shag. He was president of the Les Trente Dance Club and a member of the Epicurean Dance Club. Harry was known for his sense of humor, love of Pawleys and love of his family. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home Crematory with the Rev. Jim Dallery officiating.
