Avins Mary Stephen Avins, 65, wife of Jessie Bernard Avins, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 2, 1946, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Oliver Whiteford Stephen Sr. and Mary Frances Ardis Stephen. She was the first female police officer and the first female animal control officer for the City of Manning. She was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her husband of Sumter; a son, Lewis Herbert Mathis Jr. of Manning; three stepchildren; a sister, Pandora Stephen Bennett (Bill) of Manning; three grandchildren, Wyatt Stephen Mathis, Lewis Herbert "Tripp" Mathis III and Danielle Marie Pack (Jeffrey); three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Whitey and Keith Stephen. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Tracy Benenhaley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, 304 N.
