Copeland, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late John M. and Susan Josey Copeland. Mr. Copeland was retired from the Campbell Soup Co. after 25 years of service. Following his retirement, he was a valued employee at Trinity United Methodist Church for several years. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Ashwood Church of the Nazarene, where he served as trustee and Sunday school superintendent, as well as assisting the pastor in many ministerial duties. Survivors include his wife of 55 years; a daughter, Martha Copeland Bell (Billy) of Sumter; two granddaughters, Samantha Betush and Nikki Betush, both of Myrtle Beach; three great-grandchildren, Stella, Vaughn and Robert Marion; two brothers, Gerald Copeland (Lucy) and Josey Copeland (Joyce), both of Sumter; and two sisters, Rebecca C. McDuffie and Janie E. Copeland, both of Sumter. He was preceded in death by a son, Marion Wayne Copeland; two brothers, Donald Copeland and Thurmond Copeland; and three sisters, Leila Belken, Inez Daniels and Agnes Holland. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. T.W. Mitchell and the Rev. Robert Morris officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Adam Stewart, Phillip Wilkie, John Copeland, Michael Rodgers, Larry Betush and Patrick Belken. The family received friends Thursday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and will receive friends at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Ashwood Church of the Nazarene, 2145 Green Lane, Bishopville, SC 29010. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
