Posted Friday, March 10, 2017 6:00 am William Marion Cockerill Sr., 84, husband of Betty Jean McElveen Cockerill, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at his home. Born on June 8, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Noah Irby Cockerill Sr. and Retha Mae Hodge Cockerill. Mr. Cockerill was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church. He retired from Blue Ridge Transfer and continued working in the trucking industry for Truck and Trailer Store in Turbeville. He was a member of Sumter Masonic Lodge 364 and a Shriner, where he served as chaplain of the Jamil Cobras Unit. Mr. Cockerill enjoyed outdoor activities, building things, and riding his dune buggy and golf cart in parades around the state. He had a love of horses and NASCAR. He was always willing to offer a helping hand. While his interests were many, what he treasured most was the time he spent with his large family. Survivors include his wife of 35 years; two sons, William M. Cockerill Jr. (Tammy) of Sumter and Daniel I. Cockerill (Belinda) of Fort Mill; two daughters, Kathleen Howell (Ronnie) and Janice Johnson (Jimmy), both of Sumter; one stepson, Jerry Carter (Alicia) of Manning; two stepdaughters, Lynn Cockfield (Shubert) and Patty Isom (Glenn), both of Lake City; 17 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Howell and the Rev. Pat Coffey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Ryan Johnson, Justin Johnson, Casey Howell, Blas Cockerill, Tazz Cockerill, Jed Cockerill, Johnnie Carter and Chad Jordan. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Providence Baptist Church and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or to Providence Baptist Church, 2445 Old Manning Road, Sumter, SC 29150.
