Resources Send Flowers Now File for SSI Disability Newspaper Archive to 1690 Find Death Certificates Haynsworth "Penny" Benton Haynsworth "Penny" Benton LANCASTER Haynsworth "Penny" Pendergrass Benton, 94, of 2044 Pageland Hwy., died Friday, June 22, 2012, at Lancaster Convalescent Center. A service is scheduled for 11:00 am, June 26, 2012, at First Baptist Church (Lancaster). The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church's Family Life Center. The Reverends Lisa Ellison and Charles Benton will officiate. Entombment will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park in Lancaster. Mrs. Benton was born on January 7, 1918, in Kingstree, SC. She was a daughter of the late Hugh Haynsworth Pendergrass and Louisa Gordon Pendergrass. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Wyatt Benton, brother John Moore Pendergrass, and sisters Martha Taylor, Lucille Evans, and Hugh Ellison. Mrs. Benton is survived by son Charles Benton (Carol) of Savannah, GA, daughter Christine Hutchinson (Bill) of Lugoff, SC; 4 grandchildren: Morgan Benton (Nozomi), Claire Tunkel (Chris), Laurie Hutchinson, Lizzie Wright (Paul); and 4 great-grandchildren: Athena Benton, Molly Benton, Parker Wright, and Ellis Tunkel. Mrs. Benton worked for over 40 years as a teacher and librarian in the Lancaster County School System. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, served as a deacon, and held various other positions. She was a member of Au Courant Book Club and other local organizations, and served as a long-time volunteer at HOPE of Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lancaster Convalescent Center Activity Fund, 2044 Pageland Hwy., Lancaster, SC 29720; First Baptist Church of Lancaster, 300 Market Street, Lancaster, SC 29720; and Hope of Lancaster, 2008 Pageland Hwy., Lancaster, SC 29720.
