| HIST | JOHN M. COOPER JR. Posted: Sunday, August 10, 2014 6:00 am John Milton Cooper Jr., age 80, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014. John Milton was born in Mayesville, a son of John Milton Cooper Sr. and Margaret Louise "Maggie Lou" White Cooper, on Nov. 26, 1933. He attended Mayesville schools and graduated from Presbyterian College with a bachelor of science degree in accounting and Bible. He was married to Leila Grace Roseborough from Lugoff for more than 53 years with whom he had two boys. Surviving is their older son, John Milton Cooper III of Hopkins. Their younger son, Job Kenyon Cooper, married to Tracy Vogel of Blythewood, who died at age 25 of leukemia. They "adopted" many young men and a few young ladies into their family circle and served as youth advisers for groups at their church and for other activities. He always had a listening ear and a word of encouragement for these young people who were welcome at his home at all times. "Johnny" is also survived by his sister, Verna Louise Jenkins of Sumter (formerly Laurens); nephews, Kirk Roseborough of Jacksonville, Florida, Thomas Edward Jenkins and wife, Suzanne, of Moore; nieces Lynn Jenkins Young and husband, Joe Young, of Charlotte, and Lisa Jenkins Sapp of Wedgefield. Also surviving are great-nieces and nephews and a number of cousins. An Elder Emeritus of First Presbyterian Church (ARP), John served in many capacities including deacon, elder, Sunday School class officer, youth leader, church visitor, on various session committees and Presbyterian committees for a number of years. In recent years, he was fondly known for his faithful service as usher/greeter on one of the doors facing the cemetery. John was in the Armed Services, stationed in Germany for several years. His work experience included being a salesman for Carolina Wholesale Hardware, the South Carolina State Department of Education as auditor for bus shops and manager for Internal Services. He was asked to return briefly after retirement to help with the transition of a new state superintendent. His contagious smile and his cryptic mischievous sense of humor will long be remembered. Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian (ARP) Church, Missionary Support, 1324 Marion St., Columbia, SC 29201, or Mayesville Black River Cemetery, PO Box 441, Mayesville, SC 29104. Burial services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mayesville Black River Cemetery, Florence Highway/U.S. 76 out of Mayesville. The service will be performed by the Reverends Neal Mathias, David Lauten and Paul Pepin. Online condolences can be sent to the Cooper family by visiting www.kornegayfuneral.com. Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff-Elgin Chapel is in charge of arrangements. [2] | |
