Obituary & Service Obituary for Mrs. Barbara Ann Walker Barbara Ann Walker, 76, of Columbia, died Saturday, September 30, 2023. Born November 10, 1946, in Sumter, SC, she was the daughter of the late James Marion and Marie Abigail Owens Wheeler. Mrs. Walker graduated from Edmunds High School (class of 1965). She attended Anderson Junior College and Limestone College. She enjoyed reading, traveling with her family, baking, and serving in her church and community. She was especially fond of square dancing with her husband, which they relished for over 40 years. Her dedication to her square dancing club was demonstrated by serving in various capacities including as Chairman of the South Carolina Square and Round Dance Federation alongside her husband. She will be remembered for her many gifts of generosity, some of which include baking her famous red velvet cakes and knitting countless items for family and friends as well as knitting hats for groups such as: Camp Chemo, the Children’s Hospital at Prisma, and for Mothers of Rainbow Babies. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Richard N. Walker; her daughter, Sonja “Sunny” Maxine Walker of North Charleston, SC and her son, James “Jamie” Richard Walker of Greenville, SC. She also leaves behind her sister, Gail Wheeler Jones and her husband, Robert L. Jones, of Sumter, SC. The funeral service for Mrs. Walker will be held at 10:30 Tuesday, October 10th at Spring Valley Baptist Church, 91 Polo Rd, Columbia, SC with the Rev. Blake Jenkins and the Rev. Dr. Robert Winburn officiating. The burial will follow at 12:00 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Monday, October 9th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to The Music Ministry at Spring Valley Baptist Church, Columbia, South Carolina.
