Virginia Gasque McDowell | Visit Guest Book COLUMBIA - Mrs. Virginia Gasque McDowell, 95, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011, in Columbia, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Mrs. McDowell was born June 26, 1916, and was raised in Marion, S.C., at Oak Hall, her ancestral home. Mrs. McDowell was married to the late Edwin Burney McDowell of Kershaw, SC, for 62 years. She was the daughter of the late Williams Evan and Eady Owens Gasque of Marion, SC. Mrs. McDowell was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She was a lifelong member of Shandon Methodist Church, and, until her illness, a member of the church circles, served on the alter guild, and was a loyal and devoted visitor to the church shut-ins. Mrs. McDowell was an exceptional bridge player and participated in several bridge clubs. She was an avid reader, a passionate Gamecock fan, and was an exceptional Jeopardy player. Mrs. McDowell was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. McDowell is survived by: her daughter: Mrs. Catherine (Carl) Cromer of Ballenstine, SC; her son: Mr. Edwin (Vivian) McDowell Jr. of Columbia, SC; a sister: Mrs. Sara Bacot of Birmingham, AL; a sister-in-law: Mrs. Dorothy (Tink) Morton of Still Hopes, SC; grandsons: Joseph (Elizabeth) Jenny, Will (Mary Jo) Jenny, John (Betsy) Cromer, Thomas Cromer, Alex (Lee) Stalvey; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. McDowell was predeceased by her daughter, Mrs. Virginia Jenny, her son-in-law, Joseph "Jack" Jenny, grandson, John Jenny, and her brother, William Gasque Jr. A private graveside service for the family will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, SC, on Tuesday, February 8th at 1:00 p.m. Smith-Collins Funeral Home of Marion is assisting the family. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to the staff at the Sterling House, in Harbison, SC, for the love, support and excellent care given to Mrs. McDowell and a special thank you to the Heart Strings Hospice for their kind and loving care. Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205 or to the Carolina Children's Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204.
