- Obit reads, CHARLES S. MASON JR. Charles Stewart Mason Jr. 82, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Charles Stewart Mason Sr. and Marie DuBose Brown Mason. Mr. Mason was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Carlisle Military Academy and was a retired engineer with Seaboard Coastline Railroad. He was a life member of Claremont Masonic Lodge No. 64, Sumter York Rite Bodies and the Knights Templare Eye Foundation. Suvivors include his wife of 60 years, Emily Bolger Mason; two daughters, Carol Mason Mimms of Sumter and Peggy Mason Gamble and her husband, Thomas E. Gamble Jr. of Columbia, three granddaughters, Laurie Lynn Gamle Brandes and her husband, David Brandes, Paige Maree Gamble Edwards and her husband, Richard Edwards, all of Columbia, and Deborah Mimms Barnett and her husband, Michael Barnett, of Clover; a grandson, Thomas E. Mimms Jr. and his wife, Tonya Baker Mimms of Camden; three great-grandsons, Mason David Brandes, Dillon Samuel Brandes and Thomas George Edwards, all of Columbia; and two step-grandchildren, Larry Baker and Brandolin Baker of Camden. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Mason Scarborough. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Rogers officiating, followed by Masonic rites. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wesley Fellowship Class of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the home, 1955 Camden Road.
