Samuel and his wife had left their home in South Carolina after the “late unpleasantness of 1860-1865.” They were among the more than five thousand southerners who left their homeland and their shattered lives during the postwar years. Samuel became a laborer on the farm of a former Confederate officer, Captain George Leitner of Louisiana. In 1884, Celia, her parents and two brothers, born in Brazil, returned to South Carolina and settled in the Providence area of Sumter County. The older two children, David M. and Mary Mathilda, who had been born in South Carolina and had accompanied their parents to Brazil, stayed in Brazil. [1] |
