LYLES Cong Phan Lyles, 61, husband of Van T. Lyles, died May 24, 2008, in Vietnam. Born in Cam Ranh Nha Trang, Vietnam, he was a son of the late Phan Van Loi and the late Nguyen Thi Doan. Mr. Lyles was a lieutenant in the South Vietnamese army, serving with U.S. forces in the Vietnam War. After the fall of the South Vietnamese government, he escaped to the United States, came to Sumter and was adopted by the family of Agnes Lyles and the late Clifford Lyles. He received an associate degree in engineering from Central Carolina Technical College and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of Sumter; his adopted mother of Sumter; a daughter, Diane Lyles, and a son, Christopher Lyles, both of Sumter; and nine adopted siblings, Sybil Gaskin, Harold Lyles, Kenneth Lyles, Dan Lyles, Doris Fernander, Carol Bradham, Jerry Lyles, Bill Lyles and Jean Redman. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.
