| HIST | of Manning, South Carolina Date Published: August 12, 2008 Manning bus passenger hurt Woman in intensive care after Sunday wreck that killed 3 Eutawville residents recall crash victim By RANDY BURNS Item Staff Writer rburns@theitem.com A Manning woman is in critical condition in a Memphis, Tenn., hospital after suffering serious injuries when a charter bus overturned on a rural northwest Mississippi highway Sunday morning, killing three and injuring 38. Deloris Osteen, a Manning resident and sales agent/property manager at Re/Max by the Lake Real Estate, is in critical condition at the trauma intensive care unit at Regional Medical Center in Memphis, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday morning. Osteen; her husband, Randy Osteen; William Ellis, also of Manning; and Michael Barker of Sumter were also on the Harrah's Casino bus when it crashed about 10:15 a.m. in the median of U.S. 61 near Tunica, Miss. Randy Osteen, Ellis and Barker reportedly suffered non life-threatening injuries and were treated and released from an area hospital. The Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the people killed in the wreck as Charlotte Carros of Eutawville, Paula Kemp of Mount Pleasant and Glenda Stone of Goose Creek. Their ages were not released. There were no other known tri-county residents on the charter bus carrying 42 passengers plus the driver. Most of the passengers were thought to be South Carolina tourists on a promotional trip offered by the casino, officials said. Shelley Rhodes, a secretary at Re/Max, said Deloris Osteen was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries. "I know that both lungs collapsed," Rhodes said. "And I know she's on a ventilator." Rhodes had no information on the severity of injuries or the prognosis. Randy Osteen reportedly suffered a shoulder injury and was treated and released from an area hospital, Rhodes said. Ellis suffered bruises and some fractured ribs, said his wife, Lila Ellis. "He was banged up," she said. "He's trying to get a connection to fly back into Charleston today." Ellis was treated and released from the Regional Medical Hospital in Memphis, his wife said. Barker, who was also treated and released from an area hospital, will also be flying back to Charleston, Lila Ellis said. Ellis said the Harrah's bus was on its way to a local airport and the passengers were scheduled to fly into Charleston on Sunday. Rhodes said she understands that other South Carolina residents were on two other Harrah's buses also headed for the airport. All of the tourists flew out of Charleston en route to the Harrah's Casino trip. Harrah's advertises gambling packages in other states and hosts about 60 chartered flights a month, said Tunica County Sheriff's spokesman Larry Liddell. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Sgt. Leslie White said the bus' roof partially collapsed in the rollover. Its windows were knocked out and the sides were caked in mud. The area saw heavy rainfall Sunday, but White said authorities don't yet know what caused the bus to crash. Harrah's Casino issued a news release Monday confirming that the 42 Harrah's guests on the bus were from South Carolina. "We are deeply saddened to report that three of the guests did not survive the accident," said casino spokeswoman Valerie Morris. Thirty-two passengers were treated and released from area hospitals, Morris said. One person was not injured and six remained in area hospitals Monday. "We remain at the side of the families throughout this tragic time, continuing to assist with their needs," Morris said. "We ask for those concerned and seeking information to call 1-800-946-4946 as we continue to support the ongoing investigation." The Associated Press contributed to this report. Date Published: August 20, 2008 Manning woman expected to recover Osteen seriously injured in Mississippi bus crash By RANDY BURNS Item Staff Writer rburns@theitem.com A Manning woman seriously injured when a charter bus overturned on a northwest Mississippi highway Aug. 10 is expected to recover, family members said. Deloris "Dee" Osteen, a sales agent/property manager at Remax By-the-Lake Real Estate Co., is in good condition at Regional Medical Center of Memphis, Tenn., hospital officials said Tuesday. Stacy Osteen said his mother is expected to be released from the hospital later this week. "Everything is looking real good," Osteen said. "The family is very encouraged. She is not completely out of the woods. There's always the danger of infection or pneumonia, but everything looks good right now." Surgery on Friday to relocate a broken collarbone was successful, Osteen said. Dee Osteen suffered severe injuries, including collapsed lungs and broken collarbones, reports indicated. She has not been on a ventilator for several days. She is talking, taking a few steps and in good spirits, her son said. Osteen, her husband Randy Osteen, Bill Ellis of Manning and Michael Barker of Sumter were riding on the back bench of the bus when it skidded on a rain-slick highway and turned over several times in the highway median. She was trapped under the bus seat and upper baggage compartment. It took rescuers more than an hour to remove Osteen from the bus before they could transport her to the Memphis hospital some 40 miles away. The wreck took place about a mile from the casino, near Tunica, Miss. Ellis suffered fractured ribs and numerous bumps and bruises and was treated and released from the Memphis hospital. Barker also had minor bumps and bruises and was treated and released. Randy Osteen was found to have a torn rotator cuff and was admitted to the hospital and discharged the next day. Three other people on the trip, which contained passengers from South Carolina on a promotional trip offered by Harrah's Casino, died in the accident.
