George II (of Great Britain and Ireland), was King of Great Britain and Ireland (1727-1760), and Elector of Hannover (1727-1760), the son of King George I. George was born in Hannover (now in Germany) and he grew up a German Prince. During the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), the King subordinated the interests of Great Britain to those of his German principality. This policy was unpopular in Great Britain, but the King won admiration for his courage at the Battle of Dettingen in Bavaria (1743), the last engagement in which a British monarch participated in person. George II contributed to the material progress of Great Britain, mainly because he was shrewd enough to listen to good advice.
King George I died of apoplexy at 67 the night of June 10 while en route by carriage to Hanover. He was succeeded by his son, 44, who will reign until 1760 as George II in a reign that will be guided by his ministers and his wife Caroline. King George II died October 25 at age 77 after a 33-year reign in which he has lost favor by favoring Hanover's interests over those of Britain. His grandson George William Frederick, 22, assumes the throne as George III of Great Britain and Ireland and Elector of Hanover to begin a disastrous 60-year reign.
NOTE:
The descendants of George II of England through Joseph Pack were gotten in part from Jeff and Mary Ann Miller as well as Barbara Pate and Ralph McCathern both of Sumter, SC. Documentation lists from all these descendants are in the possession of the compiler. |
