Date Published: October 31, 2008 Sumter man dies in motorcycle wreck By HEATH HAMACHER Item Staff Writer hhamacher@theitem.com An early-morning motorcycle wreck Thursday has taken the life of a Sumter man. Jason Michael Corbett, 33, formerly of 805 Colony Road, died at 5:43 a.m. when his motorcycle reportedly collided with a vehicle near Jefferson and Airport roads. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck, but did not return calls as of press time Thursday. Sumter County Coroner Verna Moore said Corbett died from multiple trauma at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center emergency room. Corbett worked the night shift at Porter’s Fabrications as a Computer Numerical Control operator and welder. Frank Hudson, a process engineer at the plant, said Corbett was one of the best workers he’s known. “He was a very quiet individual, seems like the type who would do anything for you,” Hudson said. “He was a great guy.” Corbett recently became a member of the Sumter Masonic Temple, Lodge No. 364, and was raised to the title of Master Mason just Monday. Bobby Touchberry knew Corbett for about four or five months he said, after meeting him through the Masons. Touchberry said he and Corbett became instant friends. “He was truly a gentle giant, a very nice, soft-spoken man who always smiled when he talked,” Touchberry said. “All too young to be gone and all Masons’ hearts and prayers go out to his family.” Corbett’s coach in the Masons, Karl Schuhly, knew Corbett as a “dedicated family man.” “I was proud to be his coach,” Schuhly said. “The big fella had a heart. We should have more young people like him in the world.” Corbett leaves behind a wife, Donna Harrison Corbett, and three sons, ages 13, 11 and 2. [1, 2] | |
