"Doc" Jolly were united in marriage at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Northside Memorial Baptist Church in Sumter. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin McKinnon and Mr. and Mrs. William Anderson Sr., all of Sumter. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She is employed as radiology manager by Tuomey Healthcare System. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Jolly of Sumter, and the grandson of William Gordon Jolly and the late Edith Jolly and the late Dr. and Mrs. Camille Estornelle. He graduated from Thomas Sumter Academy and from Central Carolina Technical College with an associate's degree in automotive diesel technology. He is employed as an engineer with the City of Sumter Fire Department. The Rev. Drew Choate officiated at the ceremony. Music was provided by Joann Spigner, pianist; and Wendy Floyd, vocalist. Escorted by her son, Walker Reese Motley, and her daughter, Savannah Ashley Motley, the bride wore a strapless, candlelight satin gown featuring sequins and pearls adorning the bodice and cathedral-length train, and an open, corset-laced closure at the back. She carried a bouquet of cream and red Gerbera daisies accented with babies' breath and satin ribbon. Elizabeth Conner served as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Danielle Anderson, Riley Fowler, Sommer Fowler and Renee' Regalota. The bridegroom's father served as best man. Groomsmen were Van Thames, Robbie Stafford, Brian Christmas, Allen Anderson, Wayne Rodgers Jr., Randy Jones and Stephen Elmore. A reception was held at the church fellowship hall, followed by a celebration at The Shrine Club. The bridegroom's parents held the rehearsal party at the church fellowship hall. Following a wedding trip to Tennessee, the couple resides in Sumter. It's about 200 to 300 degrees and you're wearing about 70 pounds of gear. And you can't see very well. "I don't think there's anything else I'd rather do," said John "Doc" Jolly, a 36-year-old lieutenant in charge of the Sumter Fire Department's Thomas Sumter station. "I've enjoyed my years helping people in the community. ... I couldn't think of nothing else better to do." Those who know Jolly say it's precisely that kind of attitude that has brought him distinction among his peers. Today in Greenville, Jolly will accept the South Carolina Firefighter of the Year Award from the American Legion. "It's a once-in-a-career opportunity and ... it makes me really proud when people see the achievements of firemen around here and how good our department as a whole is," Jolly said. He's quick to point out that firefighters have to work together as a team. "I've been blessed with really good crews and really good officers. ... I'm proud of being part of such a good team over there. Every team has ups and downs but we hold it together," he said, praising the wealth of knowledge and experience of his co-workers. Sumter Fire Chief Karl Ford said among the 150 or so volunteers and about 100 full-time firefighters, Jolly is an exemplary individual. "He's a good fellow. You can't say enough about Doc. Anytime you ask him to do something - and even when you don't ask him to do something - he's on top of it." Ford said Jolly is not just an asset to the Sumter Fire Department, but to the community as a whole. "Doc's there to help anybody and everybody," he added. Jolly is a Sumter native who graduated from Thomas Sumter Academy in 1994. Two years later, he earned a degree from Central Carolina Technical College in automotive diesel technology. In October 1998, he started as a full-time firefighter. It wasn't his first foray, though, as he'd started volunteering as an eager 16-year-old. "I just always wanted to do it. Robbie Stafford was a volunteer for years and I was always talking to him," he said. In addition to being in charge of a substation, Jolly is the second-in-command of the COBRA (Chemical, Ordnance, Biological, Radiological and Weapons of Mass Destruction Response) team. He's also a certified arson investigator. "I love doing that," he said. "I guess the part of actually probing through and seeing how fire did what it did and seeing exactly where it started, trying to piece it back together." He also finds time to fix things for friends when he's not spending time with his family. "Doc's auto repair," he said, grinning. "We turn wrenches on anything." Robert "Bobby" Baker Sr. chairs the public safety committee at American Legion Post 15, the post which first awarded Jolly as the Sumter County firefighter of the year. Baker, who won the statewide award twice, said he likes to see first responders recognized for their hard work and dedication since they're often under-appreciated. "I understand he's very dedicated and takes his job very seriously," Baker said. "And he spends time that's not required to be more professional and he wants to be a professional, too." Jolly just laughs, though, when explaining his nickname. "John is my official name," he said, but everyone calls him 'Doc.' "It was my granddaddy's nickname," he said, referring to Dr. Camille Estronel, a pastor and psychologist. "Don't ask me. His nickname was 'Doc' so they named me 'Doc.'"
