Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James Flovia Burns and the late Corrina Morris Burns. Mrs. Brown was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the John Edens Bible Class. She was retired from Palmetto Gas Co. She was an avid gardener and loved to care for others, visiting and taking care of the sick. Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two daughters, Mary Ann Brown Knight (Hugh F. Knight Jr.) of Charleston, and Linda Jean Brown Lavender (Arthur James "Jimmy" Lavender) of Sumter; three grandchildren, Hugh F. Knight III of Charleston, Brian Burns Knight of Charleston, and Mary Katherine "Katie" Lavender of Sumter; eight brothers and sisters, Evelyn B. Lybrand (Walter) of W. Columbia, Burnell B. Wood of Sumter, Margaret B. Johnson (Byrum) of Sumter, Alvin Burns (Marie) of Oswego, David P. Burns (Pat) of Sumter, Robert Burns (Eva) of Florence, J. Eugene Burns (Rose Marie) of Sumter, and Charles L. Burns of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cynthia Taylor and the Rev. Bob Partin officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5575 Lodebar Road, Sumter, SC 29153. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of National Healthcare and to Dr. Hugh Stoddard.
