By JASON WERMERS Item Staff Writer jwermers@theitem.com Don't expect to find James Person stuck behind a desk at his place of work in the Sumter County Emergency Medical Service building in downtown Sumter. That's because he spends much of his time, both on and off the clock, reaching out to the community. For his work ethic, Person was named Emergency Medical Technician of the Year 2008 during a ceremony Monday evening at American Legion Post 15. "This individual has set an example for his peers of what one could do if he really exerted himself," said Ray Wilcox, a member of the Legion post's public safety committee. "He has volunteered his time to go to schools and career fairs to speak to children and adults about safety, injury prevention, community activities and potential employment opportunities with EMS." EMS Director Robert Hingst had nothing but praise for Person. "He's what I refer to as a go-getter," Hingst said. "He's an all-around good employee. He's very involved in extra activities outside the service as far as public information and education." Person has worked for Sumter EMS since April 2004, when he was hired from Carolina MedCare. He started as an EMT-basic but earned his EMT-intermediate certification while at Sumter EMS. The intermediate certification allows paramedics to initiate intravenous therapy and administer medication for diabetic patients who have low blood sugar. In 2008, Person helped schedule safety talks and special events for the service. He also schedules work assignments for all 54 employees. "He has shown great initiative in advancing his knowledge through education to better serve the service and community," Wilcox said. "This paramedic has proven to be a great asset to the Sumter County Emergency Medical Service." Hingst said Person is "not one of those people you have to stay on to get something done."
