(WACH) – Some people in a Richland County neighborhood are calling for major changes after a fiery crash killed two people a few yards away from their homes. You can still see some of the aftermath left behind from the wreck along Salem Church Road early Sunday morning. It all comes after a car swerved off the road, knocking down at least one street sign before crashing into a tree and catching on fire. “You can see the skid marks through here,” said one concerned neighbor, recalling the moments before the crash. “His car was going through this way over here, and then he hit that tree and that was it.” RELATED | Driver, passenger killed in deadly crash identified by coroner The concerned neighbor lives a few yards away from where a driver and a passenger in a Tesla, veered off the road in that crash. Both the driver and the passenger died after the car hit a tree and went up in flames. Columbia and Irmo fire officials tell WACH FOX News they were able to put the flames out in less than five minutes but couldn’t save them. “I heard this terrible sound. It sounded like metal crunching,” said another neighbor, who lives right across the street. “I’ve seen accidents before. But this is probably one of the worst, and I’ll never forget it.” This concerned neighbor who didn’t want to be identified, who saw the aftermath from his front yard, says he immediately called 911. He also said he believes the driver lived less than a mile from the wreck. “It was really unexpected and scary. Heartbreaking,” said the man. “I pray for the family of the victims.” These concerned residents fear, if nothing changes, there will be even more tragedies in the area. They want to see the state department of transportation add sidewalks, and flashing caution signs to alert of the dangers of the long, windy road, and wildlife who frequent this path. “A few years ago, somebody flipped over right in the same place on this curve,” said the concerned neighbor. “It’s terrible.” “There are a lot of people who walk on this road, and they either have to walk on the pavement or on the shoulder,” said another concerned neighbor. “We all need to be more careful and slow down.” WACH FOX News is still waiting to learn the identities of the victims and what led up to the crash. WACH FOX News will continue to stay on top of that and bring you the very latest. [2, 5, 6] | |
