Denise McLeod may have been born across the pond, but Sumter County has been her home and employer for most of her life. McLeod, the administrative assistant at the Sumter County Administration Building, was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, U.K., where her father was stationed with the Air Force. He was reassigned to Shaw Air Force Base when she was a few months old and has lived here ever since. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1978 and stared working with the county in 1983. She's worked as the administrative assistant for 18 years. McLeod has a son and a daughter, both of whom live in Sumter. What do you enjoy about your job? I enjoy working with and assisting citizens. A lot of times, I'll have to answer questions or direct people where to go when (County Administrator) Gary Mixon isn't in. It's a new challenge every day, and there's always a new question to answer. What do you like best about Sumter? I've lived here my whole life, so this place just feels like home. I'm like a lot of people: I enjoy being so close to the beach and the mountains. Like they say, we're in the middle of everything. What would you like to see change? Again, I'm like a lot of people: I'd like to see a larger variety of shops and restaurants and other things. It'd be nice and beneficial to have more retail opportunities and have a little more business growth. What do you like to do outside of work? I like to travel all over the place. I just spent some time down in Myrtle Beach not too long ago. It was nice to get away for a bit.
