Baker bbaker@theitem.com MANNING - A 29-year-old Manning man injured in a motorcycle wreck Aug. 24 remains in intensive care at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia. Michael Allen Walker of Manning was airlifted to the Columbia hospital after his 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle hit the right shoulder on Cecil Road in Manning about 7:45 p.m., according to Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. "He was traveling east on (Cecil Road), about .6 miles west of Bloomville Road, and he was going too fast for conditions," Robinson said, noting Walker was cited for speeding. "He laid the bike down on the shoulder after losing control." The posted speed limit was 55 mph, Robinson said. Walker's mother-in-law, Becky Bryant, said Tuesday that Allen is "doing really well, all things considered." "He was moved to the regular ICU (Tuesday) from the Trauma ICU," she said. Walker went for a ride on the motorcycle Aug. 24 to test the vehicle's new battery. He was planning to sell the bike that week. "He hadn't ridden it in over a year," Bryant said. "He'd just put the battery in it and was riding it to make sure it was riding OK." Walker sustained head injuries in the crash; Bryant said there was some hemorrhaging and that surgery was done to relieve the pressure there. She said Walker has been alert in the past few days and knows wife Ivy Walker and parents Mike and Cynthia Walker, who could not be reached for comment. "We have had to tell him a few times how he got to the hospital, because he doesn't really remember all that," Bryant said. She added that doctors have not made any significant prognosis for Walker's condition. "I think they're taking it a step at a time," she said. "But we're very hopeful and optimistic. Lord willing, he's certainly going to be fine. The Lord has been with us every step of the way." Reach Robert J. Baker at (803) 435-8511.
