Mr. Smith was born in Augusta, Ga., and was the son of Mrs. Myra Wise Smith and the late Mr. Maurice Smith Sr. He was a member of Our Savior Episcopal Church in Trenton and was a retired farmer. Survivors include his mother; one son, J.M. (Christine) Smith III of Decatur, Ill.; one daughter Chrissy (Mark) Wilson of Lexington; 4 grandchildren, Jacob, Jared, Molly and Wyatt; 4 sisters, Mary Jean Dowling of Sumter, Ann Day, Johnston, Bootsie Smith, Columbia, Beth Smith, Atlanta, Ga. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646. Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
