Born Feb. 24, 1931, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Gilbert K. McLeod and Willie Sue Pierson McLeod. He was in the grocery business since 1954 and owned multiple Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. He was in the Black Angus cattle business for 65 years and was the owner of Black Crest Farms. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was a lifetime member of the Gamecock Club. Survivors include three children, W.R. “Ricky” McLeod Jr. (Sondra) of Manning, Gilbert Mark McLeod (Sandy) of Sumter and Martha Melissa McLeod (Steve) of Sumter; six grandchildren, Becky McLeod, Will McLeod (Jill), Ashleigh Sommerville (Eric), John Skinner (Christine), Wade Skinner (Sarah), and Ezra McLeod; seven great-grandchildren, step-sons, Robbie Jordan (Lisa) and Rodney Jordan (Sissy); five step-grandchildren; and a special friend, Jan Whitaker. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Mr. Gilbert Griffin and Mr. Billy Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2024, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Billy McLeod was 93 and died peacefully on Tuesday, according to his son Ricky McLeod. Visitation will be Friday, April 5, at 6 p.m. at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, 515 Miller Road. His father, Gilbert McLeod, founded Mac’s Supermarkets, which changed into Piggly Wigglys in the mid-1950s, and McLeod worked in the stores for 70 years, dating to 1954. Mac’s Supermarkets started with two small stores in Sumter. The McLeod family currently owns three Piggly Wigglys in Sumter and eight total. At one time, the family had 16 stores. Carl Simpson III was 82 and died suddenly on Tuesday, according to his son-in-law Shawn Matthews. The family will be receiving visitors at the home. A graveside service will be Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Simpson’s father, Carl Simpson, Jr., founded Simpson Hardware Co. in 1951 with the purchase of stores in Camden, Hartsville and later Sumter. Carl Simpson III opened a second location at Palmetto Plaza in Sumter in 1963. Currently, Simpson Hardware has five locations: three in Sumter, one in Manning and one in Lake City. "Billy" McLeod. McLeod died on April 2 at 93 years old. He left a lasting impact in both the business world and the community of the Sumter area. He was born in Sumter County on Feb. 24, 1931, and entered the grocery business in 1954, according to his obituary. Writer Lindsay King authored a story about McLeod's legacy in the Black Angus cattle business and wrote that he was full of those endearing jokes that were good-natured and fit for a man his age. She wrote that he joked he was born in a pickup truck on Main Street in Sumter and that he said he had no business ever buying cattle but that he started with just three of them more than half a century ago, leaving time for his herd to grow like crazy, giving him just what he needed to become the successful businessman his community will remember him by. McLeod was the son of the late Gilbert K. McLeod and Willie Sue Pierson McLeod, according to his obituary, and he was the owner of Black Crest Farms, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as well as a member of the Gamecock Club.
