  HIST	Nine of twelve children survived to adulthood. Our parents were sharecroppers. After many years of sharecropping, our parents bought a tract of land which was a part of the Wells’ Plantation in Sumter County, South Carolina. They built a new home with timber cut from their newly purchased land. Our new home, nee farmland, barns and garden, proved to be a blessing to our family. Mom and dad were very proud of their accomplishment.  [1]
