He was born on May 2, 1931, in Sumter County, a son of the late Frank Sr. and Emma Pearson Hastie. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl (John H. JP Holley Funeral Home, 8132 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, is in charge of the arrangements. My first school years were spent at Bracey Elementary School which was located near the present Birnie Elks Lodge on Highway 15 South (Highway 15 and Lewis Road). I attended Lincoln High School in Sumter, South Carolina. With no transportation, I walked seven miles twice daily, until one evening I stopped and stayed with my mother’s cousin, Edith Amos Cooper, who lived in Sumter. This made it conveniet for me to get a high school education and work in Sumter after school. In between, there were times I had to return home after school to help on the farm only to start out early the next morning for school; rain or shine, cold or hot, whatever. I graduated from Lincoln School in 1950.
