Shorter James Clyde Shorter, 86, widower of Josie McKenzie Shorter, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Tom Porter Shorter and Camilla Ward Shorter. Mr. Shorter was a lifelong member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and was a retired Civil Service employee. Surviving are one son, Bill Jackson and wife, Nancy, of West Columbia; one daughter, Peggy Edmunds and husband, D.D., of Sumter; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 532 Stewart St. Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 27 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150 or to the Sumter SPCA, 1140 S.
