| HIST | Wallace A. Burgess MANNING -- Wallace Albert Burgess, 20, died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning. He was born June 17, 1991, in Morganton, N.C., a son of Wallace Jr. and Betty Whitfield Burgess. In his youth, he attended Biggers AME Church, Manning. He received his formal education at Manning High School and furthered his education at F.E. Dubose Career Center, Manning. Wallace was employed at Mideastern Truck Wash, Manning. Survivors are his parents, Wallace Burgess and Betty Whitfield Burgess of the home; four sisters, Shanna Burgess, Katrina Burgess and Akelia Withfield, all of Manning, and Lateisha Burgess of Seattle, Wash.; aunts and uncles, Emily Mack of Hartsville, Md., Frances Lemon of Manning, Sarah Gipson of Manning, Lula Jones of Highpoint, N.C., Leticia Jones of Columbia, Sarah Dixion of Manning, Stanley Price of Jacksonville, Fla., and Donald Burgess of Hartsville, Md.; one granduncle, Robert Wilson of Miami, Fla.; and a godmother, Ada King of Manning. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. with services beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at Biggers AME Church, Manning. Burial will follow in Muldrow Cemetery, Manning. The Rev. Harry Robinson will officiate with the Rev. Andrew Jordan presiding, assisted by Evangelist Pearl Robinson, the Rev. O'Donald Dingle and the Rev. Marcus Gibson. The family is receiving friends at the home of his parents, 1901 Flinn Road, Manning. These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning. BAKER bbaker@theitem.com A 20-year-old man died Sunday afternoon when the mattress he was sitting on in the back of a pickup truck bounced off onto a roadway near Lake Marion. South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Beres said the accident happened about 4:10 p.m. on Moses Dingle Road, about five miles north of Lake Marion in Clarendon County, when the mattress that Wallace Albert Burgess was riding on bounced off the back of a 1994 Dodge pickup truck driven by 53-year-old Manning resident Betty A. Burgess. A passenger riding in the truck cab was also unidentified. Beres said the accident is under investigation. See Tuesday's Item for further details.
