Summerton woman dies in crash - Ruby Griffin Mathis, 45, of Summerton, died from injuries received in a truck-car collision at Pinewood. Also injured were her husband, Thomas P. Mathis, 56, and his brother-in-law, Joseph B. Griffin, 48, of Memphis, Tenn. According to Highway Patrolman R.K. Nettles, who investigated, the Mathis' 1951 Ford was traveling northwest on Highway 261 when it pulled out into the Pinewood intersection in the path of a truck hauling lumber toward Sumter, which struck the car, driven by Mathis, on the driver's side, throwing all three occupants out. The driver of the truck, John Henry Brailsford, 19, of Pinewood, was not injured. Mrs. Mathis, in addition to her husband, is survived by her mother, Mrs. Bessie Brown Mathis three sons, two daughters and two other brothers. [2] |
