| HIST | Julia M.A. Singleton Julia Marie Ann Singleton, the daughter of Deacon Mary L. Singleton Smith and the stepdaughter of the late Matthew C. Smith, was born May 23, 1956, in Sumter. She departed this life on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Beth Israel Hospital (Hospice) Center, Brooklyn, N.Y. At an early age Judy, as she was affectionately called, attended Savage Glover Public School in Sumter. In 1970, she relocated to Brooklyn, where she continued her education at I.S. 96, John Dewey High School and T.C.I. Technical School for electronics. Judy was a dedicated employee at Key Food Supermarket in Brooklyn for 30 years. In her leisure time, Judy enjoyed watching television, reading, going to Atlantic City and especially cooking Sunday dinner for her mother, who she affectionately called “Mama.” She also cherished spending time with her nieces and nephews and having family cookouts in the backyard. She leaves to cherish her loving memories: her mother, Deacon Mary L. Singleton Smith of Brooklyn; maternal grandmother Mariah Murray of Sumter; six sisters, Maxine (Hendrake) Smith, Sandra Smith, Sybrina Copeland and Arvette Copeland, all of Brooklyn, Deborah (Robert) Ocansey of the Bronx, N.Y., and Lawanna (Tony) Haynes of Columbus, Ga.; three brothers, Randy (Pat) Smith of Dudley, N.C., Kelvin Sr. (Samantha) Smith of Brooklyn and Bryant (Arleen) Smith of Perth Amboy, N.J.; one godson, Todd Ross; 17 nieces and nephews, nine grandnieces and grandnephews; five aunts, Dorothy (Hercules) Sharper, Shirley Blair, Hazel (Billy) Clark, Cathryn Singleton and Rosa L. Smith, all of Sumter; uncles Charles (Francis) Smith of Suitland, Mass., Edward Smith of Sumter, Willie (Alvilla) Smith of Hampton, Va., Leon (Dorothy) Smith of Newport News, Va.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Judy was preceded in death by her grandfather, Otis Singleton, stepfather Matthew C. Smith, nephew Bryant Smith Jr., uncle Jonathan Singleton and two cousins, Arnice Walker and Monifa Cheagle. Public viewing will be Monday, May 6, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service. Homegoing services will be Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Baptist Church on Hwy. 521, with the Rev. M. G. Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the Haynesworth Cemetery.
