| HIST | HOWARD E. DEW Posted Thursday, October 5, 2023 6:00 am Howard E. Dew, 69, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and friends Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023. He was born March 9, 1954, in Bishopville and was a son of the late Herbert O. Dew and Doris (Gandy) Dew. Porkchop was an avid deer hunter and a huge South Carolina Gamecock fan. Gene also followed Braves baseball and was an enthusiastic supporter. One of his greatest thrills was taking someone, who had never been hunting, to kill their first deer. However, beware, if you did kill your first deer, you were required to wear a Gamecock hat and hold the pink BB gun, for a photo! Gene also enjoyed many years of golf which included several trips with friends and family, where he even won a few tournaments. Gene worked for Dupont/Invista and was a loyal employee for 48 years. Surviving in addition to his wife, Leslie Hussey Dew, are his stepchildren, Billy and Whitney McMillan, both of Sumter, whom he treated as his own; three spoiled rotten Boykin Spaniels, Cooper, Esso and Tillman; one brother, Herbert "Bert" Dew (Vaughan) of Camden; and two sisters, Debbi Davidson (Tommy) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Janet Lorick of Lexington. Gene also had three nephews and a niece, Trey Dew of Sumter, Nick Davidson (Chelsea) of Atlanta, Georgia, Louis Lorick of Lexington and Jana Geddings (Patrick) of Lexington; and five great-nephews and -nieces. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Ricky Lorick. A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy Geddings officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Grace Baptist Church and other times at his home. Honorary pallbearers will be Dwayne Cooper, Darren Cooper, Steve Hough and Sgt. Major. My family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Amedisys Hospice Nurse Barbie McAlister, Shelia Nelson and the employees at the Radiology Specials at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, Attn: Megan Baker, 86 Jonathan Lucas St., MSC 955 Charleston, SC 29425 or Amedisys 198 E. Wesmark Blvd. Suite 2, Sumter, SC 29150. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements. [2] | |
