| HIST | Couple found dead in New Zion home Posted Friday, November 1, 2019 6:00 am BY SHARRON HALEY Clarendon contributor MANNING - A New Zion couple, including the wife who taught at Laurence Manning Academy, is dead following a "domestic violence situation" that occurred at their home early Thursday. The bodies of Jessica Purvis McFaddin, 40, and her husband, Samuel Raymond McFaddin III, 39, were found inside their home by a family member, Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley said Thursday afternoon. Clarendon County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation into the two deaths, Baxley said, which is ongoing. Baxley would not comment on causes of death, a weapon or which parent was the victim. Clarendon County Coroner Bucky Mock said autopsies will be performed on both bodies at MUSC in Charleston. Students, faculty and staff at Laurence Manning Academy, the K3-12 private Christian-faith school where Jessica McFaddin was employed as a teacher and adviser of the school's yearbook staff, were devastated Thursday morning after learning of the death of their beloved teacher. McFaddin also served as the school's director of public information. "Not only was she a great teacher who was loved by her students, but she was a personal friend," said the Rev. Arthur Sharpe, LMA's adult chaplain. "We're having a difficult time, but God is helpful and merciful." Sharpe said 25 counselors and pastors were at LMA on Thursday "praying and talking with students." "We will continue with counselors and pastors [today] talking with students," Sharpe said. "We've also been proactive and reaching out particularly to her students and those who worked with her on the yearbook staff. We are a close family at LMA." Sharpe asked for continued prayer for the family, which includes two children. Sheriff Baxley would not comment on whether the children were at home when their parents died or where they are staying now. Sharpe said LMA has seen a lot of tragedy through the years. "We know our students," he said. "We will be here for them." The two deaths come at the end of National Domestic Violence Month. Each October, domestic violence is recognized through educational awareness events, community gatherings and support groups. The theme for 2019 was "#Thing." The purpose of the 2019 theme was to remind everyone that ending domestic violence "starts with just one small action, whether it's seeking help or sharing resources." The McFaddins' deaths have not been the only fatal domestic violence incidents in the headlines recently in the tri-county region of Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties - not even this week. A 29-year-old Sumter woman, Sharee Bradley, and her 5-year-old daughter, Nevaeh Adams, were stabbed to death on Aug. 5, and her partner is facing two murder charges in connection. Bradley's body was found in their apartment, but the killer hid the girl's body in a Dumpster, which was emptied that day. After an extensive search through hundreds of tons of garbage and assistance from local, state and national agencies, her remains were found on Oct. 18 in the Richland County landfill. The child's father filed a lawsuit on Oct. 29 claiming the apartment complex had knowledge of previous, unrelated criminal activity and failed to install adequate security systems and safety measures. What is domestic violence? A pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both partners in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, cohabitation or having a child in common. It is not just physical abuse. Physical: Any contact that results in bodily injury, such as hitting, kicking, slapping, cutting, choking, punching. Sexual: Forcing unwanted, aggressive or violent sexual activity on an unwilling partner. Emotional: Behavior that threatens, intimidates or undermines a partner's self-worth or self-esteem. Economic: Abuser has control of finances and other economic resources. (Prevents partner from pursuing education, obtaining employment or securing the means to leave.) Clarendon County Coroner Bucky Mock released initial autopsy results Monday morning for Jessica Purvis McFaddin, 40, and Samuel Raymond McFaddin III, 39. The two were found at their New Zion home by her father Thursday morning, according to a Clarendon County Sheriff's Office incident report obtained by The Sumter Item. Deputies were dispatched to the scene on a call of a possible homicide-domestic violence/suicide, though neither Mock nor Clarendon County Sheriff Baxley has confirmed the case was a murder-suicide. When deputies arrived at the Carmel Lane residence about 7:40 a.m. on Oct. 31, they found two bodies. Jessica McFaddin was found on the front porch to the right of the front door in an upright position. Her back was leaning on something, and she appeared to the deputy to be lifeless, according to the report. Her husband was found lying on his back in the front yard, also lifeless, with a handgun located between his legs, the report says. Their two children were not mentioned in the report's narrative or as being present. Jessica McFaddin taught history and served as the yearbook adviser and director of public information for LMA, a K3-12 private Christian-faith school just northwest of the City of Manning. An annual scary hayride was changed to a “Hey Hay Glow Ride” on Halloween weekend, where the school sold glow sticks and donated a portion of the proceeds to the McFaddin children. The school canceled its Thursday night B-team and junior varsity games versus Wilson Hall, and its varsity football team took a knee at Friday’s game in their teacher’s memory. Her funeral service was held Monday morning, for which school was canceled. Her obituary that ran over the weekend in The Sumter Item has no mention of her deceased husband. She would have turned 41 on Nov. 10. Hot Hot [1, 2, 3, 4] | |
