Posted Wednesday, February 8, 2023 6:00 am MANNING - Loving husband and father, Aubrey Benson Atkinson Jr. was at home surrounded by his family when he entered into God's kingdom on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, after a valiant fight with cancer. Benson was born on June 6, 1946, to Aubrey and Doris Atkinson of Elliott. He graduated from Lynchburg High School and majored in forestry at Clemson University. Benson served in the S.C. National Guard and later retired from the S.C. Forestry Commission after serving 20 years as a Lee County Forest Ranger. He also furthered his training in fire investigation and law enforcement at the S.C. Fire Academy and the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy. Benson was a deacon in Elliott Baptist Church and loved singing with his church choir. He was a member of Bishopville Mason Lodge 102, received Meritorious Service Award, Florida Distinguished Service Award, past president of Bishopville Optimist Club and also was a receiver of the Optimist of the Year Award. His faith led him to serve as a staff member at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in North Carolina, where he met his wife of 55 years. Benson loved God, cherished his family and held a willingness to serve others in his heart. Benson joined his parents, Aubrey and Doris Atkinson, and his great-grandson, Oliver Gage Hayden, in heaven. He is survived by his wife, Millie; sister, Lynn Roberts; children, Tres (Marlo) Atkinson and Courtney (Chad) Fletcher; grandchildren, Avery Atkinson, Bethany (William) Bazzle, Molly Hill and Luke Fletcher; great-grandchildren, Grayson and Kol; and his beloved dog, Elliott. Faithful servant: "But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded." 2 Chronicles 15:7 (NIV) The family will receive visitors beginning at 10: 30 a.m. on Saturday at Elliott Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Services will be held in the sanctuary at 11:30 a.m. with graveside interment immediately following at St. Luke Cemetery, Wisacky. Donations may be made to Santeeboatchurch.org.
