| HIST | Evelyn lived in Sumter County, South Carolina in 1980 of Lithia Springs, Georgia how is Jeremie Sanders Cuttino her great-nephew? jkh Evelyn I. Avin ATHENS, Ga. -- Evelyn I. Avin, age 79, was born July 22, 1932, in Sumter. Mrs. Avin departed peacefully Tuesday morning, April 24, 2012, at her home in Athens. A hard worker and determined spirit, she had three jobs by the age of 14. She was a graduate of Edmunds High School, where she treasured her experiences in home economics and anything related to productivity, thrift, and graceful etiquette, which she shared with numerous generations of family and friends. Her senior photograph was inscribed "Sweet Girl … Loves to Sew … Wants to be a Homemaker …". She married a farm boy musician with stars in his eyes and made her family a sweet home no matter what the circumstances, and she always managed to keep them sewn together. She and her husband and two children moved to Huntsville, Ala., in 1965, where she made many lifelong friends. They returned to Sumter in 1975, where she resided until her son graduated from high school. She then set off for numerous "extended holidays" with her daughter in the Atlanta area to play her most important role of "Nanny" to her three grandsons. While living with her son in Columbia, she enjoyed the music, culture and diversity of the University of South Carolina, and became an official den mother of her son's theatre circle. She moved to Georgia in 2000 and adapted perfectly to the University of Georgia family in Athens, where she lived the remainder of her amazing life. Evelyn continued to sew and craft handmade dolls and toys for children. Although she lived the latter 45 years of her life with total blindness, she was unstoppable in her abilities. She crafted gifts for her family and friends, as well as lodges and community groups, and dominated the North Georgia State Fair for three consecutive years as the blue ribbon winner for hand sewn dolls. She had a solid daily routine inclusive of giving her three grandsons a wake-up call every morning, encouraging them to do well in school and to eat a good breakfast. She was a dedicated Atlanta Braves baseball fan from "all the way back when nobody loved them." She enjoyed listening to any "First Baptist Church Service," no matter where she resided. Despite her many health challenges through the years, her faith never faltered. She adored and loved her family and friends, and was shamelessly proud of her hometown. She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Avin Thompson; her son, David Gregory Avin; grandsons, Jeffrey Kyle Thompson, Justin Ronald Thompson and Jason Levoid Thompson and his wife, Julie Vandiviere Thompson; her brother, Richard Gilbert Barkley and his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Geddings Barkley; her sisters, Sarah Jeanette Barkley and Fannie Barkley Ward Green and her husband, Oliver McLauren "Laurin" Green; her brother-in-law, Robert Furman Avin and his wife, Midge; sisters-in-law, Margaret A. Frick, Mary Alice A. Griffin, Rosemary Avin and Betty J. Avin; as well as 26 nieces and nephews and their spouses and children, many of which favored their "Aunt Bebbie." She was predeceased by her mother, Eulene Osteen Barkley; her father, Richard Sanders "Bubba" Barkley; father-in-law, James Ralph Avin; mother-in-law, Lillie Johnson Avin; her husband, Walter Bernard Avin; brothers-in-law, William "Bill" Griffin, J.D. Frick, Robert Wendell Ward, Ralph Eugene Avin, Hubert Raymond Avin and James Roland Avin; and sisters-in-law, Peggy Boyette Avin and Jeanette Bartlette Loomis. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel, 1190 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150 with Pastor Steve Hendricks of Bethel Baptist Church of Sumter officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home. You may sign the family's guest book at www.bullockfuneralhome.com. The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements. Jeremie's mother Kathy Ward is Evelyn's niece. I'm very interested in this side of the family's history. I'm seeing it doesn't go back much further than my mother's (Evelyn) grandparents. Someone else asked the question of why her Aunt Pauline Brown had the last name Brown instead of Osteen. We were always told our grandmother Euline Osteen Barkley (she died when my mother was 6) and her siblings were raised in an orphanage or children's home. So it could be that Aunt Pauline had been adopted. How can I become involved in this? David Avin thedavidavin@gmail.com [3, 4, 5, 7] | |
