She was born in Hagood, a daughter of the late Robert Russell and Lalla Hix Atkinson. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she earned her teaching degree. Courtney traveled extensively with her husband during his military career. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Episcopal Church of Hagood. She was predeceased by her husband, William Joseph Valentine, four brothers and one sister. Survivors include twin daughters, Courtney L. Jones of Raytown, Mo. and C. Louise Wallace of St. Helena Island; and three grandchildren, Delores C. Bitler, Kenton A. Jones and Jonene L. Collins. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Beaufort National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Tidewater Hospice, 181 Bluffton Road, Suite B102, Bluffton, SC 29910.
