TIMELINE, from George Singleton : Christopher Singleton came from Isle of Wight, England to King William Co VA before 1740, an adult parent of three boys, Robert Singleton,
b. 1724, Isle of Wight, England; (Col) Matthew Singleton, b. Isle of Wight, England, 1730; and James Singleton b. last (date unknown to me), Isle of Wight, England.
Christopher befriended early Baptists in Virginia but was himself an Episcopalian. He was born in Isle of Wight, England, but later resided in Gloucester County, Virginia.

1. CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON on 11 Aug 1758 had action taken against him in Caroline Co. for collection of a debt.
2. SOUTH CAROLINA DEED ABSTRACTS 1719-1772, Vol IV by Langley, p. 153: "MATTHEW SINGLETON, carpenter, and MARY, his wife, to ISHAM MOORE, planter , both of Craven Co SC for 200 pounds currency, 160 acres in Craven Co, on NE side Santee River, bounding SW on the out lake; NW & NE bounded on CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON land; SE on MATTHEW SINGLETON land; being part of 2 tracts of 62 and 98 acres; 1 granted 6 Sep 1754 to MATTHEW SINGLETON; the other granted 13 March 1757 to James Brunson who sold to Matthew Singleton. Witnesses: Richard Bradford (son in law of ROBERT SINGLETON, older brother of Col Matthew Singleton), George Norwood, John Foster. Before JOHN NEWMAN OGLETHORPE, J.P. on 16 March 1770. Recorded 10 Dec 1770 by Henry Rugeley, Register. Plat given."

Same book, deed book R-3, pp. 511-515, dated 27 Nov 1770 "Release: MATTHEW SINGLETON, carpenter,and MARY his wife, to Isham Moore, planter, both of Craven Co SC, for 500 pounds currency, 400 acres in Craven Co at the HighHills, bounded NE & NW on Peter Porcher; NE on CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON: SE & SW on MATTHEW SINGLETON; SW on vacant land; NW on Andrew Rambert; granted MATTHEW SINGLETON 21 July 1769. Witness: John Foster, ROBERT SINGLETON (b. 1726, d. SC in 1800), Samuel Clark. Before John Niven, J.P. Recorded 12 Dec 1770 by Henry Rugeley, Register."
4. In 1772 CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON was mentioned as a planter in VA, who came to the aid of a Baptist minister who was being persecuted by some other religious group or sect in Caroline Co VA.
5. Both Christopher Singleton and his son Robert Singleton (older brother of Col Matthew Singleton) were granted SC lands for their services in the Indian Wars.

CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON 6 June 1777 per page 195 of book SOUTH CAROLINA DEED ABSTRACTS 1773-1778, p. 518,519 reads:" I, Christopher Singleton of the County of King William, Colony of Virginia, planter, appoint my son Robert Singleton of same county (who was b. 1726, so he was of legal age, ie, 51 years old in 1777 (NOTE: Robert Singleton, son of Christopher Columbus Singleton was born in late 1758, so was not yet of legal age, ie, he was only 19 vs. legal age of 21) but shortly intending to make a journey to the Province of South Carolina, constitute him my attorney, to sell a tract of land whereof I am seized, 300 acres of the High Highs of Santee, Craven Co SC, granted to me 8 May 1758 (for Indian War services, this land is adjacent to land of Col Matthew Singleton there in SC). Signed Christopher Singleton (LS). Witnesses: John Wingfield, Jos Oliver, Mordecai Booth. Proved 7 June 1777 in King William Co by John Wingfield, Joseph Oliver, and Mordecai Booth. Recorded 17 Jan. 1778. ***NOTE: Christopher Singleton died in 1778.
7. Same SC deed book, same page, another deed recorded in detailed deed book on pages 519-522: "Lease and release, 15 July 1777, Christopher Singleton in the State of Virginia, to ISHAM MOORE of Craven Co, SC, for 2500 pounds SC money, 300 acres at the High Hills of Wateree River adjacnent to
land laid out for Peter Porcher, Matthew Singleton. {NOTE: THIS IS THE ACTUAL SALES DEED OF THE ABOVE 300 ACRES WHICH CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON AUTHORIZES SALE OF IN #4, ABOVE) CHRISTOPHER SINGLETON (LS). Witness: Matthew Singleton, Thomas Moffett, Mary Singleton (wife of Col Matthew Singleton). Proved in Camden District by oath of Matthew Singleton 1 Dec 1777 before John James, Jr. (nephew of Mary James Singleton, w. of Col Matthew Singleton). Recorded 17 Jan 1778 (1778 is when Christopher Singleton died).

150 acres on the High Hills of Santee in St. Marks Parish, Craven County adj land granted to Arthur Richardson, John Beekman, John McIntosh, Philip Pettypool, land granted to Samuel Hopkins. Ann Clark (LS). Wit: ROBERT SINGLETON, RICHARD SINGLETON (his nephew). Proved 4 March 1777 before
Nathanile Moore, J.P. by the oath of ROBERT SINGLETON. Recorded 26 Apr 1777." ****NOTE: The only ROBERT SINGLETON of legal age in 1777 in SC was ROBERT SINGLETON b. 1726 d. 1800, older brother of COL MATTHEW SINGLETON. Robert Singleton (b. 1726) was 51 years old in 1777.

LETTER OF ATTORNEY
LET THIS INDENTED writing testify to all whom it may concern that I Christopher Singleton of this county of King William in the Colony of Virginia planter for diverse good Causes & Consideration me there onto moving HAVE made, constituted and in my Stead and place put my Son Robert Singleton of the County and Colony afore said, but shortly intending to make a Journey to the Province of South Carolina, my true and Lawful Attorney for me, in my Name and to my use to bargain, sell, Convenant and Cotract with any person or persons whatsoever for the absolute Sale and Disposition of the Tract of Land whereof I am Seized, containing Three Hundred Acreas situated on the High Hills of Santee in the County of Craven & Province of South Carolina, & which was Granted to me by Letters Patent bearing date the Eighth day of May One Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty Eight and upon such bargain & conttract any good and Sufficient Deed or Deeds Conveyance or Assurance, for conveying the said Land to the Purchaser or Purchasers in fee-simple with General Warrantee, for me & in my Name to Sign Seal & deliver as my Act and Deed, and the same to acknowledge before any Court or other persons Competent by Law to receive the same. Also to receive the Consideration Maney and give full Acquittances for the same either in my name or his own and generally to do & transact any other matter or thing in and about the Premises, as fully as I my self could or might do if I was personally present hereby abide, ratifie and Confirm whatever he shall lawfully do therein WITNESS my hand & Seal this Sixth day of June One Thousand Seven hundred & Seventy Seven.

NOTE: Daniel Singleton first appears in Orange Co. in 1737 as a young man with one tithable. Phillip Singleton purchases land in Orange Co. in 1741. This land is the 100 acre Haley tract mentioned above, on Mine Run in Orange, recorded 25 June 1741.
