I can’t find JoAnn in the computer and I’m sure that I put her in there, so I’m using DuBose as her last name for now, so I can continue to find it. jkh----Three years ago today, a 53-year-old Manning elementary school teacher, JoAnn DuBose, was found slain inside her home by a close friend. • The man charged with her death, Anthony Woods, is in prison awaiting trial. • On June 4, 2003, DuBose, who lived at 306 Major Drive, wasn’t answering her home telephone or her cell phone, which was unusual for the gregarious school teacher. When Gloria Eanes, DuBose’s best friend, was unable to reach her by phone, she became concerned and drove to DuBose’s home to check on her. • What Eanes found has haunted her every day for the past three years. Every night, when Eanes closes her eyes, she said, she sees DuBose’s body. • “I’ll remember that sight until the day I die,” Eanes said Friday. “When you have a good friend like JoAnn, you don’t forget.” • Eanes described the emptiness she feels every day and the days she wants to share a secret or a story with her best friend, who is no longer there. • “I was talking the other day about JoAnn and it was as if she was right there,” Eanes said. “I miss her terriblyl”. • With Woods’ trial rumored to begin in late summer, Eanes said she’ll be in court every day. • “I’m not looking forward to the trial,” she said. “But it will be a relief when he’s convicted that he’ll finally pay for this.” • Woods is being housed at the Department of Corrections in Columbia serving time on two prior convictions. • On July 21, a Clarendon County jury found Woods guilty of criminal sexual conduct, burglary and assault in another case. He was sentenced to life in prison on the first-degree burglary charge, 20 years for assault and battery with intent to kill and 30 years for criminal sexual conduct, with the sentences to run consecutively. • On Dec. 7, a different Clarendon County jury found Woods guilty of first-degree burglary and two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature for a break-in at a South Street home. • Woods was sentenced to the maximum on all three convictions: life in prison on the burglary charge and two 10-year sentences on the assault charges. • On March 15, 3rd Circuit Solicitor Kelly Jackson notified Woods and his attorney, James Hoffmeyer of Florence, that the state will seek the death penalty for the murder, robbery and sexual assault of DuBose. • No trial date has been set. • On Friday, Eanes said a friend asked her if she remembered the significance of this weekend. • “I just looked at her and said, ‘I know. I’ll never forget,’ Eanes said. After deliberating less than three hours Tuesday afternoon, a Clarendon County jury found Anthony Woods guilty of murdering, robbing and sexually assaulting 54-year-old elementary school teacher JoAnn DuBose in June 2003.
