Born May 6, 1939, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eugene and Viola H. Ray. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. He was employed at Wando Furniture and Georgia Pacific for many years and then retired from Shaw Air Force Base as a housing maintenance supervisor of the 20th Civil Engineering Squadron. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William E. Ray and Dewayne D. Ray (Amy); and four sisters, Hermina Ray, Lila Dyson Bates, Diana Rausch (Skip) and Pamela Hood (Dean). He was a loving grandfather to 11 grandchildren, Courtney, Lauren, Stacia, Cody, Micheala, Colt, Austin, Ethan, Brycen, Dalton and Trent. He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Ray. Pete was a good husband, father, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Miller and Dr. Eleazer Benenhaley officiating. Burial will be in Longbranch Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tony Carpenter, Chris Hood, Dean Hood, Sonny Benenhaley, Keith Ray and Justin Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Hillside Hunting Club. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2970 Peach Orchard Road, Dalzell.
