Avin Ardis, 93, widow of Richard Ardis, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Pharaoh Avin and Maude McLeod Avin. Mrs. Ardis attended Alice Drive Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, John, Walter and Joe Ardis, all of Sumter, and Don Ardis of Lexington, N.C.; two daughters, Shirley Nesbitt of Sumter and Peggy Cochran of Beckley, W.Va.; one brother, Jimmy Avin of Sumter; two sisters, Jewell Griffin and June Morris both of Sumter; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Ardis officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at 1600 E. Liberty Street.
