Family members said that the cause of death was a stroke. He was 64. “He was a great guy,” said Herb Leaird, chief executive officer of Black River Electric Cooperative and a friend of more than 30 years. “Tommy did a lot of good for people don’t know about. I can’t tell you how much he did. He was very generous. And in business, he was firm but fair.” Harold Benenhaley, vice-president of Glasscock, echoed that sentiment. “He was one of a kind. I’ve known him for 35 years and he felt like my big brother. He was shrewd — a perfect businessman, and he got me where I am today. He is going to be terribly missed.” @$:Born on Sept. 23, 1944, in Sumter, Glasscock graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1963. He joined the Marines, where he served from 1963 to 1967, including one tour in Vietnam. Former commandant Bill Hartley of the Marine Corps League, Sumter Detachment 1202, where Glasscock was a member, said, “Tommy was a lifelong member of our Marine Corps League detachment, and he was very supportive of our programs. He always made huge donations to Toys for Tots, as well as our other causes.” After the Vietnam War, Glasscock came home to Sumter, where he joined the family business. He purchased Glasscock Trucking from his father in 1978, then expanded it to one of the largest trucking companies in the state. Glasscock sold the company in 2007 and retired, after many years as a board member of the S.C. Trucking Association. Glasscock was a longtime member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. He also served as a board member of Covenant Place. According to son Jamie Glasscock, his father was a lifelong football fan of the University of South Carolina. “He loved college football,” Jamie said. “It didn’t matter who was playing — he would go.” Close friend Monroe Swearingen of Columbia said, “Tommy was a great and loyal friend, and I will certainly remember him. He was loyal to all of his friends. That was one of his key traits, and I think he developed that from his Marine Corps days. — Annabelle Robertson Tommy Glasscock, Prominent Businessman, Dies in 64 - Tommy Glasscock, former chief executive officer of Glasscock Company Inc. of Sumter, died Monday morning at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
