MANNING – Virginia Lee "Gee" DuBose Cottingham, 91, wife of Mitchell Caradine Cottingham, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born July 8, 1917, in Sardinia, she was a daughter of the late Marion Epps DuBose Sr. and Mora Davidson DuBose. She was a 1939 graduate of Winthrop College, having earned a bachelor's degree in education. She was married to Mitchell on June 20, 1942. She taught in the public schools of Summerton and East Clarendon school systems, and formerly owned and operated a gift shop in Manning. Virginia Lee was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning, where she served as an elder, was head of the children's junior department and conducted seminars throughout the state with this program. She was past president of the Presbytery, past president of the women of the church, and past commissioner to the general assembly of Presbyterian US in 1976. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary Williams-Burgess Post No. 68, serving as past president, and counselor for Girl's State in Columbia. Her focus was on Christian faith and family relationships.
Surviving are her husband of Manning; her daughter, June C. Briggs and her husband, Robert, of Manning; two grandsons, Robbie Briggs and his wife, Amy, and Coty Briggs and his wife, Aften, all of Manning; great-grandchildren, Grace, Carol Ann, Rob and Mitchell Briggs; and an aunt, Pauline Sewell of Montgomery, Ala.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mora Elizabeth Cottingham.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.
