JUANITA T. SMITH
Juanita Tomlinson Smith, 82, widow of Donald Lansing Smith, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009.
Born March 9, 1927, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Bartow Tomlinson and Etta Mathis Tomlinson. Mrs. Smith resided in Sumter County most of her life, but also lived in Charleston from 2002 until 2009, where she enjoyed time with her grandchildren. She and Mr. Smith returned to Sumter in early 2009 and resided at McElveen Manor.
Mrs. Smith was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a wonderful homemaker who loved family gatherings, music, playing the piano and organ. She was a talented cook and seamstress who enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was also an avid reader. She was married to Donald Smith for 59 years. She was an active member of Concord Presbyterian Church for many years and was involved in leadership roles with the women of the church, church youth fellowship, Sunday school, and at her children's schools. She was employed by Liberty Life Insurance and was a longtime employee of the Capitol Department Store.
Survivors include a son, Donald L. Smith Jr. (Margaret) of Dalzell; two daughters, Karen Owens (Clay) and Cynthia Mappus (Rick), both of Charleston; six grandchildren, Tammy Kinsey, David Kinsey, Katie Owens, Eric Mappus, Daniel Mappus and Drew Mappus; four great-grandchildren, Haley McCoy, Chelsey McCoy, John McCoy and David Kinsey Jr.; two great-great-grandchildren, Camron Tyler McCoy and Jaden Thomas Smith; three brothers, Onice Tomlinson of Florence, Albert Tomlinson (Betty) of Spartanburg and Theron Tomlinson (Saundra) of Lynchburg; three sisters, Janet Turner (Richard) of Florence, Joyce Wadford and Judy James, both of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Braswell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
